The effect of poor economic conditions upon a group cannot be overstated. From the there are myrieffects on health to the affect wealth or lack of wealth can have on cognitive development and learning; there are myriad studies that underscore that how a community does economically has a direct correlation to how they do in terms of mental, social and physical health and development.
This is nothing new for black people.
We have spent decade upon decade suffering the effects of oppression and being denied economic equality not only in America but throughout the African diaspora. From colonialism, slavery, Jim Crow, the destruction of Black Wall Street, the list of negative impacts that underlie the weakened position of the African diaspora in the world is long and ongoing. However as the saying goes...all things come in cycles.
Evidently according to new research, there is a described 'Sea of Despair' sweeping through the white community in America. Basically older white Americans are for the first time seeing a reduction in life expectancy due to an increase in suicides and drug overdoses.
The economy is one of the underlying factors driving this trend. However this trend seems to only be effecting whites despite how we all have been suffering from harsh economic realities. At the same time that this trend has been becoming apparent, another trend which we at Afro-Pick.com believe to be closely related has arisen.
The resurgence of white nationalism aka 'alt-right' aka white supremacy.
One only had to listen to all the dog whistles during the campaign of then presidential hopeful now President Donald Trump to understand that there was a definite link between the despair caused by nearly a decade of economic hardship and feelings of hatred towards any group that could be blamed for that hardship. Immigrants, poor black people, etc. All of the typical groups of people labeled as the 'other'.
We need to 'Make America WHITE Again!' We all heard that dog whistle loud and clear.
The campaign took full advantage of the despair in order to propel itself to victory on a platform of fear and hatred which has seen bright sparks ignited in the hearts of people like Dylann Roof and James Harris Jackson.
Considering the people who have been put into positions of power in this administration and their agenda which does not care about black or white but whose focus is upon the color green and putting more of it into the pockets of the wealthy, we expect and warn our people that the despair gripping the white community will only increase and as they realize they have voted the fox into the hen house. When this realization comes to fruition we hope to be prepared.
We ask our readers to look forward not backwards. And PLEASE join the discussion and reply to this post!
