Greetings Citizens and Guests of Afro-Pick.com!
We were going to make this a blog post but we wanted some direct feedback and discussion and hope that the following idea/proposal will get some of our readers to actually take that next step and register and join in the discussion.
We are contemplating what we are currently thinking of as the 'Small Town Initiative'.
Basically in America in every state you the citizen has the ability to incorporate into a town albeit each state has its own requirements on how to go about doing so. From what we have researched, once a town is incorporated the people of that town have the ability to elect their own officials. Towns don't need to be very big. According to Google a town can have a population between 1000-20,000 people.
The reason we are placing this thread on the Black Solutions board is that we feel that if black communities across America took the initiative where feasible to incorporate themselves into small towns they could then leverage their political power in a more focused and localized fashion that would not be quite at the mercy of the larger county or municipality. We could be completely thinking of this thee wrong way but after hours of googling and reading we could not disprove our initial hunch.
We feel that having more black communities becoming towns could directly impact issues such as:
Policing - Elect a Sheriff from among your own
Economic empowerment - Contract with black-owned businesses for delivery of services such as trash collection, landscaping, etc.
There are likely more issues that could be tackled directly in the black community if our communities were not simply communities but actual incorporated towns with all the legal rights that affords depending on the state.
However as mentioned we only did some research and are far from experts in this area which is why we didn't make this a blog post. Please register and share your thoughts or check us out on our facebook page here.
We really want feedback on this! Besides our facebook page you can also emails us at afropickstaff@gmail.com.
What we want to know is do you agree that incorporating black communities across America would be a good direction for leveraging black political power to effect change within our communities ? LEt us know what you think.
